Dealing with Aging Parents - The relationship is worth more than making sense

Last weekend when I was home to visit my Father and Mother who have 24hr in-home care I was reminded of what my good friend T. Ho Haryadi said about relating being more important than making sense when dealing with people that have a decline in mental abilities.

I used to try to point out to my parents what was "right" as their mind started slipping and often lead to them just feeling criticized or my father getting emotionally upset. My father has become more emotionally vulnerable and my mother more feisty with aging.

I was sitting next to my Dad watching an action movie (he still likes them) and from his recliner chair he looked at me and asked how his parents were doing. I just answered "fine" (they died years ago). Then he asked if they were still in Allentown PA and I said they moved to Womelsdorf PA and were doing well (where they were buried but that was not said as well). He smiled and looked back at the TV.

After the show he was ready to go to sleep and I talked to the caregiver a bit then went upstairs myself. At the top of the steps my Mom scared me half to death. She was hiding behind the banister at the top of the steps and said, "Ssh, they don't know I am still up". I just replied, in a soft voice, "I understand, I will help you back". I took her arm under mine and lead her back to her bed where she went to sleep. I think she thought she was 12 years old listening in on her parents conversation. My friend John Z. pointed out how he had a similar situation with his grandmother and how he realized that in that moment the 90+ year old women got to be young again.

What a gift that I discovered that relating is more important than making sense, so I could be with them in their aging process. I need to tell you I still have a lot of stress with the responsibility of taking care of them but these are precious moments that should not be missed.

Remembering Dad

I heard my Father speak through me today

It's a good thing

A business conversation with me appreciating them at the end

He was always the cheerleader of his officemates

Will call him and tell him when he gets back from dialysis today

May not understand it, so little of him left

Dad, you are welcome to live on through me

My Father is still with me and is moving a bit slower due to so many challenges he has overcome. He goes to dialysis three times a week and is tough on him. I have been blessed to move from the Son to the person overseeing their well being. I never had my own children but not under what it means to be a parent more then ever. It has given me flashes of memories and insights. This poem is one of those insights. I want to honor the important an vital energy of Fatherhood in the world. I am also blessed to have good people helping both parents.

Men and Grief

We often criticize men for not grieving in an open way, but that is not how most men grieve.

Men typically grieve by doing, vs. the open showing of tears, and this should be valued just as we need to have room for people grieving their loss through tears. Men in history have done many great things out of great loss as have women, but I hear more complaints about men not showing feeling at a loss than women. What is missed is the beauty of men creating something out of grief with great action.

I propose that the geodesic dome by Buckminster Fuller many never have existed if he had not lost his daughter. “Fuller's young daughter Alexandra died from complications from polio and spinal meningitis. Allegedly, he felt responsible and this caused him to drink frequently and to contemplate suicide for a while. He finally chose to embark on "an experiment, to find what a single individual [could] contribute to changing the world and benefiting all humanity."” (Wikipedia)

In 1927 Fuller resolved to think independently which included a commitment to "the search for the principles governing the universe and help advance the evolution of humanity in accordance with them... finding ways of doing more with less to the end that all people everywhere can have more and more."

After this time came Buckminster Fuller’s invention of the geodesic dome, “the lightest, strongest, and most cost-effective structure ever devised”.

To paraphrase my good friend Tom Golden who wrote the leading book on men and grief, Swallowed by a Snake: The Gift of the Masculine Side of Healing: Don’t ask a man who has had a loss how do you feel; ask him what do you need to do to deal with this loss?

The answers varied, but one key point was clear: Women have a lot of power over their men. Brossman said men have a basic need to be honored. Women have a need to be cherished. It made me think of my husband surprising me with a laptop and a desk when I wanted to revive my writing career. I told him he was my hero, and I felt like a brainy princess. It worked out for both of us.

Brossman was bold in his statements about what he calls "icky, passive males." He gave an example of when a friend broke an important promise. He said he left a message on his answering machine that masked how he really felt which was angry and hurt."

What an enlightening experience! Last night, May 4th, I attended Martin Brossman's seminar about men (he's coming up with a new title) at the BNC center. About 13 years ago, Martin attended a men's weekend in LA that truly changed his life. I know he's telling the truth, because about 10 years ago, my husband attended the same men's weekend in NY, which played a big part in bringing out this masculine, emotionally expressed, man of integrity that I married.

At the end of the weekend both men attended, they were advised to find a group of mature men to support these insights and keep them true to their mission. So, not having a group near by, Martin began his own men's group called the Triangle Men's Inquiry that has been meeting monthly for the past 12 years. This seminar was a culmination of all that Martin learned about the struggles of creating healthy, mature males from these meetings.

Martin made an important correlation between the lack of sufficient forces to develop these healthy men and the rising prison population, more than 50% divorce rate, and the non-ethical business and financial practices causing havoc in our world today. I agree, since the feminist revolution, men have been confused about their identity, and society has been confused as to what we really want from our men. Martin offers answers and powerful solutions that will help this gender find it's balance and place once again as centered, strong, fully expressed, contributing men.

Some of the gems I picked up were:
1. That I don't have to fix or be everything for my husband/son. His happiness is not my responsibility. I can be a wife/mother and support him in many ways, but he needs other men to challenge him, give him attention and space to sort through his feelings, and validate him when he takes action along his life purpose.

2. When my husband (or father, brother, son) actually expresses his feeling to me, DON'T DIG DEEPER! Recognize that he processes emotions differently and most likey slower than I, so be happy that he is expressing something. If I push it, he may keep his feelings in the next time.

3. Men have the ability to do before they have the ability to feel. So when I notice my husband with an emotional struggle, I can ask "What do you need to do to make you feel better/complete/relieved/satisfied?" And he may just have to mow the lawn in order to work out his angst about his boss, and that's his process.

4. Give room for my husband to be a father in his own way. There is no need for me to micromanage his relationship with his off spring. Afterall, they're his kids too, he has a right to discover th man he wants to be for them and with them. I can even help him out by handing him the baby and walking out the door for at least four hours.

I higly recommend you spreading the word about Martin's mission and learn ways to support the men in your life as they strive to reach their full potential.

I truly enjoyed Martin's talk, and came away nothing short of enlightened! I realized I'd been making some assumptions about men and boys, and those assumptions were nearly opposite of the truth. A couple of things that struck me last night were:

1. Many self-help books are geared toward the way women operate. Martin shared how for men, "getting in touch with one's feelings" in the same way that women do can be harmful, even lethal! I had never realized this before.

2. Men have their own signature way of processing emotions, that's more about doing than sitting and talking. I now understand why my husband Andrew goes out and mows the lawn when he's stressed. Whereas I would call somebody and vent and feel better, he feels better by -doing- something instead.

3. Boys' need of mentors and rites of passage to grow into mature men. This is really going to affect the way I work with students. I already make a point to talk to students about how with every practice session, they become more closely knit into the worldwide fellowship of musicians. But I wonder if I could make this even more concrete, would it help young boys even more? Is this why school bands and choirs, when run well, save young men from gangs and street life?

4. I have had many experiences of being marginalized as a woman, but men have these experiences too. Hearing Martin talk challenged my misguided notion that men live on "easy street" while we women have to fight for our rightful place in the world. Men have their own challenges--and knowing this, I can now be more sensitive and understanding.

I agree with Martin's comment about "movements". I bet, one person at a time, that Martin's message will grow and spread. I think I'll use the information I learned last night to be more at peace with men in my own life--to see where they're coming from, to let their workbenches be messy, and to let them be where they're at.

My Father’s Workbench

On my 50th birthday in April, I spent the day taking both my parents to two doctor appointments, an exhausting time for them and me. At the end of the day, I went into the basement of their home, the Washington, D.C. house where I grew up, to find a quiet moment. Finding myself standing in front of Dad’s workbench. I got out my cell phone and took a picture.

Later when I looked at that photo, I knew why I had choked up a few weeks before when I stood in my just-built garage in Raleigh, when I was deciding where my new workbench would go. Looking at Dad’s old bench made me realize just how deeply I have always wanted a place to have a home-made workbench like his, one where I could work on household repairs and make things. Most of all I wanted a big sturdy bench where I could properly mount my red vice that I have carried with me from three places I have lived.

I realized, too, that creating my own workbench is connecting me back to the time as a kid when I worked with my father at his workbench. It was where Dad always started house jobs from, and where we ended house jobs by putting away the tools. It was part of connecting with my Dad, who worked a lot but still had time for us to do things. It was not the cleanest workbench and that is part of what made it great. The bench was a piece of heavy plywood that he cut and laid across the top of two unfinished dressers that he found on sale. It could hold all our tools on the pegboard wall or in the dresser drawers. My favorite drawer was the one with the soldering iron and electrical stuff in it.

That bench had history. Each cut in the surface, outline of spray paint, glob of epoxy that had stuck to the paper and the bench, and the drill hole that went too far through the wood, were all important. It was the evidence that represented my father and I working with our hands to figure something out, reminding me how he would share when he did not have it all worked out, but would in time. We did minor plumbing that sometimes lead to major plumbing, requiring a plumber to finish the job. We did simple wiring and electrical projects, like rewiring a lamp on the bench or gluing a broken cup after mixing the gray two-part epoxy on the workbench.

It was on that bench where I cut out the aluminum holes for the knobs, meter and connector of my lie detector science project-- modeled after one in Popular Science Magazine--that won first place. My father let me do as much of it as possible, right down to misspelling the word Calibration on the front. All this hands-on experience made me a hero in college because I had a small tool chest (which was a portable workbench to me) and could fix things that the other guys in the dorm could not.

From the “men’s work” that I have been involved in, to my work with The Triangle Men’s Center as their Vice President, I have learned a lot in the past decade or so about the mental wounds that can occur in men’s lives due to an absent or abusive father. I have met so many men who never had this element in their life, who never had a Dad who included them in house jobs, or experienced a family workbench that held the tools they used together. And I have learned that often men who do receive from their father the importance of having a work space (or their own space) will later give it up to please their family or someone else.

I believe these spaces are part of us. They are more important than many of us realize. The guys who give up their own space, who don’t create their workbench area , may not realize the cost until much later in life. Maybe you have a memory of a workbench. Maybe you need to go futz with something on your workbench. Or maybe you need to create a space for a workbench. Think about it.

Even though my father is on dialysis and much weaker now, I know he will be glad to see a picture of the workbench I am going to build in my garage. It will be ready to photograph when I attach the red vice that mounts with 4 big bolts on its right-hand corner. Over time, it will collect its own holes and nicks from the projects I imagine happening on it. I’ll have to remember to take a picture years from now.

Thanks Dad, for introducing me to the workbench. You weren’t just teaching me handyman skills, you were modeling patience and confidence, and how to carve out a small space for peaceful enjoyment . I hope to keep sharing this valuable message with other men who might be missing the importance of a workbench in their life.

I'm very excited about the chance to hear Martin talk about this material live. When I first met Martin, coming up on a year ago this summer, I had no idea that in addition to being a well-rounded warm engaging intelligent business man and coach, that he was also an activist for the healthy maturation of men. Martin lent me a copy of his CD of this talk, and I was on fire with the insight and understanding he had of men in this culture. I had studied women's studies at University, and nearly majored in it. That was invaluable for my own growth as a fully empowered human being. What I didn't know at the time is that men, though it looked like they had more power and influence in the business world, were seriously limited in other ways by our culture. From Learner Dads to finding your own inner Mr Invincible, Dads On The Air is covering a lot of ground this week. First up we talk with Peter Denman who has set up a website, is running workshops and has published a book for first time dads. As we all know, becoming a father for the first time can all come as a bit of a shock! After that we talk with Martin Brossman from the US. He runs a series of men's groups and is the author of Finding Our Fire. We close the show with Dr Elizabeth Celi, author of the just-published Regular Joe vs Mr Invincible: The Battle for the True Man.

Peter Denman writes:

Going to be a father for the first time? Scared? Clueless? Not sure what to expect? It's enough to make a daddy-to-be drink! Enter the new, research-based, father-focused LEARNER DAD workshops. Designed and developed by qualified male counsellor and father, Peter Denman, LEARNER DAD workshops provide first time dads with practical information, advice and support in the most comfortable, non-judgemental, dad-friendly environment- the pub! Having a baby is one of life's most stressful events and most new dads are unprepared for the adventure that lies ahead. With so much emphasis on the needs of mother and baby, dads-to-be are often forgotten and sometimes receive little or no specific support. Let's face it, they're unlikely to read parenting books and often don't take much away from antenatal classes.

Denman hopes to fill this noticeable gap in parent education and complement existing antenatal classes by holding his LEARNER DAD workshops in local pubs close to maternity hospitals. The open discussion workshops address small groups and are facilitated by Denman - an engaging presenter and father who is experienced in helping people navigate life transitions.

LEARNER DAD focuses on key issues in the first 6 months from a father's perspective, helping new dads understand what parenthood is really like so they can enjoy fulfilling relationships with their partner and children.

"Most new dads are completely unprepared for the lifestyle and relationship changes that occur post-birth", explains Denman. "Research shows that the birth of the first child is the most difficult transition for most couples. Antenatal classes are great for preparing couples for the birth, but there is limited information to support new dads when their partner and baby return home from hospital and they begin the juggle and demands of work and home life."

The workshops cover topics such as postnatal depression, work/life balance, relationship conflict, time management and change, all from a father's perspective. They are currently being held in Sydney pubs with interstate workshops coming soon. Denman adds, "Investing in just a few hours at a LEARNER DAD workshop can give dads the confidence to enjoy those first 6 months of parenthood. The bottom line is that involved and equipped fathers are better able to support their partner and bond with their child."

The concept launches on Saturday, May 17th with its first workshop at the AB Hotel in Glebe and bookings are currently being accepted via the LEARNER DAD website. Finding Our Fire is based on the Men's Inquiry Group which has been meeting monthly in person and on-line for over 10 years. In the Inquiry meetings, men explored questions about their lives that give new insights and new actions to take. The meetings have inspired men to enhance their relationships with their families, improve their jobs, and resolve old issues in their lives that previously held them back. Questions explored in the Men's Inquiry have included: What does it mean to be a man today? How do you discover your purpose in life and live it while providing for your family? What type of son were you to your father? How do you keep love and passion alive in a long-term relationship? Dr. Elizabeth Celi is a privately practicing psychologist, speaker and author. After six years working in a private psychiatric hospital helping people hospitalized with chronic depression and anxiety, she has since incorporated her knowledge and skills with clients in private practice for 5 years, before their symptoms become so disabling. As a qualified personal fitness trainer, Elizabeth advocates for exercise and other pro-active activities to help reduce the risk of frustrations, irritability and withdrawal before it creates a risk for depression and anxiety. Especially with our modern day stresses in society and families posing more challenges to deal with. Her work with men and women experiencing relationship difficulties highlighted the disadvantage men were at in expressing their opinions and getting their point across to their partners. Women always seemed to get more in more often! She'd often have to ask the female partner to wait a moment while he got his answer in, uninterrupted.

Managing this on the one on one level with individuals and couples, while effective, was simply not enough for Elizabeth, who could clearly see the internal battle that men have between their Regular Joe and Mr Invincible, who simply didn't know any other way to cope. Having the time and insight to support men who really wanted to be their own True Man as a husband, partner, father, provider, brother and friend, Elizabeth was driven to raise awareness on a larger scale to help more men remember their strengths and help more women appreciate those strengths. This drive gave birth to her book, Regular Joe vs. Mr Invincible - The Battle for the True Man. Her book helps women learn how to support men more and helps men step back into the game with confidence. Advocating for men and their valuable place in our society and families at the recent Men and Fathers' Health Forum at Parliament House in March, Elizabeth continues to push for a National Men's Health Policy so that the value of men and their ability to look after their own health reminds all of Australia about men's strengths and abilities.

Experiences Men had by Contributing to the Book

As I have been answering the questions posed for this book, many things are happening. I am thinking about what I have written, sometimes way after I've written it. I am seeing myself and listening to my own answers as though I am someone else. The way that this seems to be helping is that looking like this is clearer and without my judgments. It's helping me see what is true rather than what I have distorted. For example, I found myself writing about my experiences with my father. He may not have been as cruel or violent as I wrote. Maybe I portrayed him unfairly. He didn't know how to express love, and yet I know he loved. His intentions were good. His work ethic was strong. He came from a life of hardship and cruelty in the old country and here in the US also in the early 1900s. Several of his brothers died in prison. And his family was broken, with young children put out on their own or in his reckless care.
He had bursts of meanness and violence. But, at the tenacious and caring hands of my mother I saw him reform and soften as he aged, with his desire to be responsible to his own family of six. My mother got the $96 weekly paycheck and she gave him $10 for all his expenses. He often worked dangerous jobs for extra money. He always came to watch me in sports. He was not educated. I was ashamed of him. He wasn't afraid of anyone. He seemed stingy but was generous to his family.

I am hurt that I only got brief dialogues with him, and none when I was older. I feel he had a lot to tell me about and I want to know now... but can't. Yes, as a boy he hurt me physically and it was a struggle psychologically too. But, I see now I was strong enough that it didn't harm me in any meaningful way. Perhaps it even inspired me to be not like him... and it is taking me a long time to be Not like him. He was unpredictable, often hypocritical in raising me, and he was prejudiced against ‘Negros’ being in the neighborhood. This bothered me a great deal, even as a small boy and it has turned into my being my own lifelong watchdog for my prejudices. And prejudices creep into everything, interfering with my seeing the 'real' thing. And this has turned into my greatest aspiration-- to listen fully.

So, when I first wrote about all this in answering the questions for the book, my memories were vague. But, as I wrote they became vivid. And my story was created.

The questions alone were worth the price of admission! Seriously, I got as much out of reading the questions as I did out of replying to them. What have I committed to do different? I could answer something for almost every chapter of questions. One of the main items is realizing that my parents did the best they could in the situation they were in. They almost changed before my eyes as I asked the questions over and over. I can not imagine a man’s life would not change by reading these questions, in fact I can imagine a woman’s would not as well.

The reality TV show

Martin Brossman will and Joeph will be guest "experts" on the reality show "Wife Swapping" . Considered one of the "more compassionate" reality shows. It was to help with a man that does not stand up for himself in any way. Details to follow after the filming. I can only say that it may occur, not when or where at this time.

"Wife Swap, the critically-acclaimed unscripted reality show that takes us into the intimate heart of the American family home, revealing the extraordinarily different ways families live their lives, is in its third season on MONDAYS (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network."

Black Men Doing Their Part in Their Community!

I have been conducting "The Men's Inquiry" for more than 10 years, providing a forum for men to discuss issues of importance to men One of the shortcomings to me of this "men's work" is that it has been made up of mostly white men and I wanted to see more diversity. It was with great humility and joy that I learned of Leroy McIntire and his work. This week, Thursday night, January 25, I drove from Raleigh to Laurinburg (100 + miles) to meet with Leroy and talk with a group of African American men who he brought together as a men's discussion team.

I met with some fine men in Laurinburg and hope they gained as much value from the interaction as I did. We shared the unique challenges of men but also the unique challenges of the White and Black cultures. My perception has been that the African American culture is characterized by very strong women who are often the core of the family and the strong role of the men is not always as clear. As we appreciate our history as a nation, we realize that there are many reasons for this condition.

I have heard many times from African American men, "I am black so what value would I have as a father except providing money." This attitude forces many young black boys to take on the 'father role' in their own family. Becoming the little man in the house can produce resentment towards older men. In addition many Black women sometimes don't have a lot of trust in the ability of a black man to provide for his family, take a leadership role, and be present as a father, due to many reasons. This is a problem for all of us and this creates a challenge for the men who truly want to take back their communities, be responsible for their families and be the leaders and the fathers they are meant to be. When joining together they are faced with simple resistance and suspicion "Why are the black men getting together without any women--What are they up to." The men I talked with were not a part of the problems--they were about realistic solutions.

What can be done to overcome the perceived resistance and suspicion? These men pointed out that more and more African American women are ready to support and give more trust to men having seen how the absence of strong fathers can help fill our prisons with their sons. These men are insightful and understand they have to address the unique situations in their own community and earn the community trust before they are able to move forward. They also have the courage to take the task on. I was so honored that they trusted me to partner with them in our mission to help men be better fathers, leaders, and partner; that I had to write this note today.

I look forward to the next time they allow me to learn with them in the pursuit of their calling. When I got to know Leroy he quickly became one of my hero's now I have 5 more men on the same path in Laurinburge NC. I want to publicly thank them for what they are taking on.

For when boys don't have enough father and mentoring support they tend to act out in society and that is a cost to all of us!

In 1999, MKP began recognizing men and teams of men (i.e. I-group) who were actively demonstrating living a life in mission. Specifically this mission was in service to the world – NOT to MKP. The award was named after the late Ron Hering, one of the three founders of the MKP. Typically these awards were announced and presented at the mid-year conference.

4. Martin Brossman has selflessly served the men’s movement for over ten years in numerous ways. In addition to his active involvement in MKPI and his I-Group, Martin served on the Leadership Council of the Triangle Men’s Center at a critical time in its history and contributed to the survival and continued existence of this resource for local men. In addition, he is the founder and continuing convener of The Men’s Inquiry, an open monthly dialogue for men committed to deep, authentic exploration of masculine identity and men’s issues. He has opened the Inquiry not only to local men, but to men nationally through his use of the phone bridge and an Internet website, toinquire.com. The on-line Men’s Inquiry includes men from around the world exploring monthly issues about our lives. Martin’s articles on men’s issues have been published in several on-line men’s journals. He was a key player in the creation of the first community-wide forum on father issues with over 400 participants. His commitment to appreciating diversity has led him to seek alliances with different groups, including assisting churches in developing their men’s work. In this vein, Martin assisted an African-American North Carolina man to create a black Christian men’s group based on his Men’s Inquiry principles. Martin has volunteered to speak to numerous groups on The ManKind Project and men’s work, including a presentation for women’s groups called “What’s New About Men That Women Want to Know,” where he shares his own experience of the value of men’s work. Martin created an active blog called “Single Mothers Raising Sons” to support the involvement of men in our community in the raising of boys who are living with single mothers. Five years ago Martin also created a complementary once-a-month Women’s Inquiry in his home. As a result of the success of the Men’s Inquiry and to extend its impact into the world, Martin has also compiled an extensive collection of male voices on critical issues of concern to men soon to be published in both CD and print formats, entitled Finding Our Fire: Enhancing Men’s Connection to Heart, Passion & Strength, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the Triangle Men’s Center and referencing MKP as a resource for men.

This CD is well introduced and outlined, covering many topics. What strikes me most about is the honesty, and how men are speaking from their own experience, knowing that it has value. It talks about how we, as men, validate ourselves how we handle responsibility, how becoming a man can mean being responsible, and how that can level the playing field for all men. It talks about giving credit where credit due, about marriage, knowing what it is, being the person you want to be without having to jump trough hoops, traits of good people, how men contribute to each others lives. Excellent, raw communication on the important things in men’s lives.

Martin Brossman, the creator of this CD was on my radio show on July 4 (www.letstalkmarketingshow.com). My first thoughts were about listening to this CD, "Why would I want to listen to a men's group? I am a woman, this is men's stuff." My curiousity got me to listen. I listened to men's perspective about their life and how they manage their communications. I was able to put myself in their shoes during the process and was able to take away many tips on how I can improve my communication to men in the future. Since then I have tried a few things out. And they worked. My communication with men has improved. Making a mind shift in order to improve communication skills can come from many sources. This one took me completely by surprise. Thus, if you are a women and only think this is for men, open your mind just enough to think of this from a different angle because there is one. As a birthday gift I requested men participate in the 1st live recording of The Men’s Inquiry meeting. This will be a complementary product to the upcoming book “Finding Our Fire”. The recording is in processing now and will be available on CD at the end of May. Following is the comments from a remarkable woman on hearing the draft of the first live recording The Men’s Inquiry:

It was amazing how engrossing this discussion was in the disembodied fashion of listening to the sound tracks alone. There was no distraction to the listening since there were no faces, body language, or gestures to vie for attention. I heard honest communication almost entirely free from defensiveness. Your point in the introduction about not offering solutions because they can raise defenses was interesting and, I confess, hit home with me. It was amazing how on target and true the discussion stayed while flowing very naturally. It was also interesting how the men respected the rule about each other's speaking time. The voices seemed stress free throughout the comments. By this I do not mean uninvolved or unconcerned, I simply mean I did not hear the tension of immediate stress in their voices. There were a number of fascinating insights brought out in this discussion. Listening/checking in with what a person heard, voice tone, the importance of recognition, the importance of and what it means to give and keep one's word and the wisdom and courage to know when to break that word - and the recognition that both men and women have the responsibility to own positive (I am avoiding the term 'good') traits. The recognition that it is okay to say no was a good one. I think sometimes women think we are the only ones to 'over commit', so it is interesting to hear men wrestle with this as well - or recognize that they need to deal with it more effectively and positively. It was also interesting to hear men discussing that it takes commitment from both parties to make good two-way communication (even mundane communication) and to have an abiding relationship. What also caught my attention is that there was no 'posturing'. The men seemed to speak from where they were, not where they thought they should be or where they perceived the world thought they should be. This really is a huge thing! As one man said, it was amazing to him that what was going on in his head was going on in other (men's heads) as well - this despite the fact he came from an apparently different background experience from at least some of the other men - a sort of we are different, but we are the same kind of thing.It seems to me that maybe men learn to 'protect' themselves (or is it protecting their concept of masculinity?) to "hold their place in society" in ways that vary by their cultural influence while women learn to protect themselves to "gain a place in society" in ways that vary by their cultural influence. With 'shields of all sorts up' with all of us, effective communication can be a daunting task - men to men, women to women, men to women, and women to men - yet communication is the key to good personal relationships to successful work outcomes, even to honestly knowing yourself. Your Men's Inquiry Group gives an open forum for men to practice those honest communication skills for self understanding, all kinds of interpersonal relationship development, and even to promoting active achievement recognition. What a mission you are on!!It took me over an hour to write these few comments because I kept having to reflect on something else I heard in the discussion. It also is now about 2:30 AM so that may have affected my thoughts! I don't know that you expected comments, but I simply wanted to share a little of what I got from hearing an unexpectedly powerful "ordinary' discussion among men. Thank you for the honor - and dare I say trust? - in sharing this with me. It has given me greater insight into your work and appreciation of your very special skills.

We have received all the contributions from over 120 men, about 400 pages and are now integrating and editing. Having 120 men’s ‘voices’ and attempting to make the minimum edits to make it readable has turned out to be quite a challenge for the main editor John Sharpe and my father (that is helping with the 12 additions). If any of you know of groups that we could speak at or ways to let people know about the book please email us. Also, for Martin Brossman’s birthday next month he is asking men to come to a special men’s inquiry that will be recorded live at his house. Your names will stay confidential but you will be asked to sign a simple ‘release’. This will allow men wanting to start a group be able to ‘hear a live’ inquiry in progress. Another Men’s group started that The Men’s Inquiry was honored to participate in helping!
Many men’s groups have started with help from The Men’s Inquiry, but we did not ‘track’ their progress. The help was given freely. In the future we will share the good news of anyone who has used The Men’s Inquiry as a resource to start a group of men, and would like to start today with a wonderful man who found us on the Internet and is building his team of men in Laurinburg NC . This is the comment he wrote, and check out his web site. Even though the Men’s Inquiry is NOT faith-based ( and we support men of all faiths ) we are open to helping men reach men in any way they are called to do so. I am proud to post Leroy’s note and website..

“Martin, I would like to share, how the Raleigh Men's Inquiry Meeting Helped Me. Shortly after I moved to Laurinburg and became reasonably settled, I was ready to interact with other positive men who were interested in getting together to discuss issues of substance, such as ways to enjoy better relationships across the board issues that dealt with refining our emotional qualities. I was seeking a group that was interested in discussing topics that dealt with acquiring more balance in our lives.

I searched the Internet and found The Triangle Men’s Inquiry Meeting. Since I could not find a group such as this in Laurinburg, I decided to attend the meetings in Raleigh. This would give me an opportunity to achieve personal growth and to get some pointers for starting a group such as this in Scotland County. As a result of participating in the meetings in Raleigh, I received growth, support and encouragement from all the men. Update on the progress of the book “Finding Our Fire”

We have received all the contributions to the book, including two more chapters that are being added-- competition & money. This completes the 12- week program that was used to collect more contributions to the book in the chapters that I felt needed a little more information or did not have enough diversity.

Now my father is working on editing weeks 6-10, about 180 pages in Word, while I am integrating weeks 11 & 12. This ‘integration’ involves converting the real names of each man to their pseudonym and adding each man’s reply under each question in a single Word document. I am finding all of this work very tedious and slow. I do have to work on making a living while doing this (grin). Since I use text- to- speech software to read for me (due to my dyslexia), I get to enjoy the wonderfully courageous contributions of these men discussing their lives.

I have found 5 possible printer/publishers and a friend is researching to decide which is the best for the book. Over 500 postcards are being hand-distributed about the book and some on-line men’s websites are exploring writing reviews of the book.

We have chosen to have three versions of Finding Our Fire

We have decided that since there are so many wonderful contributions that over 100 men have made, there will be three versions of the book. The main one, which will be designed to be ‘accessible’ to the largest audience, by its size, and other factors, will be about a 6" X 9" paperback, approximately 190 pages long. The second will be the core of all contributions, with several interesting add-on’s for those who want a broader perspective. and it will be an 8.5”X 11” paper bound book. This lets us include a greater number of the contributions in print. The third will be an e-book that can be downloaded. Things may change as we get closer to finishing.

Also two more sections were added in the last few months. One on competition and the other on money. We decided this had to be part of this printing.

About the cover of "Finding Our Fire": I (Martin Brossman) created it completely at an intuitive level, keeping my ‘right brain’/logical/critical side out of it. It represents passion as well as struggle. I have used a photo of my own hands along with a younger photo of myself making a sword move from Aikido. The fire, the sword, the man, and the hands together are symbols of man's strength and passion, as well as his personal struggles. The cover art is not to be taken literally. It can be seen as evocative symbolism for men's need to express their deepest emotions without resorting to outbursts of anger or violence. Just as the martial artist controls his world of physical strength and emotion simultaneously, the art of a well-lived life requires a man to control his personal "fire" in order to live amicably with others; yet he can not completely douse that fire if he hopes to retain the energy and power he needs to successfully move through his work and personal life with dignity and respect. In the same vein, the title, "Finding Our Fire", is using the word "fire" metaphorically, referring to strength, personal courage and heartfelt emotion. Join us on the on-line version at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/TriangleMensInquiryMeeting/ We have been exploring questions about men’s lives for over 10 year’s now and are celebrating this year with the up coming book “Finding Our Fire, Enhancing men's connection to heart, passion and strength”, which is due out this Spring.

"Finding Our Fire" is based on the Men’s Inquiry Group which has been meeting monthly in person and on-line for over 10 years. In the Inquiry meetings, men explore questions about their lives that give new insights and provide the basis for new actions. The meetings have inspired men to enhance their relationships with their families, improve their jobs, and resolve old issues in their lives that previously held them back. Questions explored in the Men’s Inquiry have included: What does it mean to be a man today? How do you discover your purpose in life and live it while providing for your family? What type of son were you to your father? How do you keep love and passion alive in a long-term relationship?

The book is a multi-purpose tool: it can simply enhance the individual reader's life, or it can serve to facilitate the formation of men's groups to support ongoing growth on a broader scale. It also provides a much needed impartial window into the inner world of men that seems to improve women's understanding of men and men's understanding of themselves. The compelling questions have had a powerful impact on the men whose responses are included in the book, and many of those who have seen preview chapters are looking forward to enthusiastically using the questions in their men's workshops and seminars across the country.
